Royal foundation of the church
King Childebert, son of Clovis, had a church built and richly endowed, dedicated to Saint Severinus, to ensure the celebration of the divine office.
Childebert, son of Clovis, enlarged this edifice and had a magnificent church built there under the tit le of Saint-S everinus, which he endowed with rich revenues for the maintenance of the divine office.
Evolution of the abbey and fate of the relics
Louis VII established an abbey in 1151, entrusted successively to the canons of Saint-Augustine, Bendersheim, and then Sainte-Geneviève, before the relics were dispersed by the Huguenots and the Revolution.
In 1151, King Louis VII established an abbey near this church, made famous by the miracles of Saint Se verin. The re gular canons of Saint-Augustine were tasked with serving it. In 1480, it received the reform of the regular canons of Bendersheim, in Guelders; finally, and since November 21, 1636, it belonged to the Congregation of France of Sai nte-Geneviève. When the Huguenots pillaged the church, they dis persed a portion of our Saint's relics; the remainder disappeared in 1793.

The life of Saint Severinus was written b y Faus tus, his disciple and companion, and abridged by Surtus. Bishop Equilin, Abbot Tribbeau, and Ussard make honorable mention of him, as do the Roman Martyrology, Cardinal Bar boïus in his *Rem arks*, and the sixth volume of his *Annals*, in the year 508.
