SAINT LEUBAIS OR LEUBAIS OF SENNEVIÈRES (circa 540).
Life and virtues of Leubais
A disciple of Saint Ours, Leubais distinguished himself by his voluntary poverty, his charity towards all, and his rigorous personal austerity.
Leubace, commonly known as Le ubais, was the principal discip le of Sain t Ours and his assistant in works concerning the glory of God, such as the construction of monasteries and the preaching of the Gospel. A voluntary pauper, he proclaimed the poor Christ. There was room for everyone in the depths of his charity. Austere only towards himself, he regulated his entire life according to the precepts of Saint Ours, his master, and by living according to the rule, he lived for God alone.
Foundation of Sennevières
Saint Ours founded a monastery at Sennevières in Touraine and entrusted the direction of the community to Leubais before leaving for Loches.
Saint Ours , who had already founded several monasteries in Berry, having entered Touraine, established there, at the pla ce called S ennevières, a monastery and an oratory, and, when he withdrew from this place, he appointed Leubais to the government of his brothers before taking up his residence at Loches.
Abbotship and burial
After the death of Saint Ours, Leubais officially became abbot of Sennevières, where he died at an advanced age and was buried in the parish church.
Saint Ours having ascended to heaven, all those whom he had placed at the head of his monasteries received abbatial functions from th e bisho ps. Leubais was therefore created abbot of Sennevières. He lived in this place in rare holiness until extreme old age, rendered his pure soul to his Creator, and was buried in the parish church which today bears his name.
Topography and local cult
The church of Sennevières, located near Loches, is dedicated to the saint whose body is said to rest under the choir, although the exact location is uncertain.
Abbé Rolland sent us the following information from Tours on March 18:
"The church of Sennevières, dedicated t o Saint Leubais, was probably built on the very site of his oratory. Sennevières is a small village of 390 souls, in the canton of Loches. Unf ortunately, it i s not known what became of his body. The parish priest writes to me that it was believed in the region that he rested in a vault located under the bell tower, in the choir."
The miracle of the alder
A local tradition reports that the saint cursed the alder trees after a footbridge broke, explaining their absence in the commune's territory.
A popular tradition recounts that one day Saint Leubais, wishing to cross a stream, stepped onto a small footbridge made of alder wood. The plank broke under him, the Saint fell into the water, and he cursed the alder throughout the territory of the commune. What is certain is that one does not see a single tree of this species there, and all those that one has tried to plant there have died.
