Angelo of Gualdo was an humble Italian shepherd who became a Camaldolese lay brother and later a recluse following a pilgrimage to Compostela. Known for his charity and life of contemplation, he died in 1325 in a miraculous posture of prayer. His cult was officially recognized by Pope Leo XII in 1825.

Born near Gualdo, Angel manifested from his youth a great piety and exemplary charity towards the poor despite his own poverty.
This Blessed one was born in the vicinity o f Gual do, a city i n the Roman S tates. Although a young and poor shepherd, he was noted for his love for the poor; more than once it happened that he shared his food with them.

After a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, he entered the Camaldolese order in Italy as a lay brother.

He retired into solitude for a life of fasting and contemplation, triumphing over temptations and performing miracles.
Some time later, he went to live as a recluse in a solitude of his native land: there he led an angelic life in fasting and contemplation. On feast days, a priest brought him Holy Communion. The demon sought to turn him away from his vocation, but by means of the sign of the cross, Angel put him to flight. Favored with the gift of miracles, he performed several for the sake of his neighbor.
Death and recognition of the cult
Died in 1325 in a posture of prayer, he became the patron of Gualdo; his cult was officially approved by Leo XII in 1825.
