Saint Valerius was the first bishop of Comminges at the beginning of the 6th century. After the location of his burial was forgotten, his body was miraculously discovered by Bishop Theodore, who had a basilica erected in his honor.

    Origins and rediscovery of the tomb

    Saint Valerius is identified as the first bishop of Comminges by Gregory of Tours, who recounts the miraculous rediscovery of his tomb by Bishop Theodore.

    Saint Valerius , as we learn from Sain t Gregory of Tours in t he book of The Glor y of the Confessors, was the first bishop of Comminge s (Conserans). The sa me historian recounts that an ancient oratory, originally built over his tomb, having been ruined by the ravages of time, the place where the Saint's body rested was forgotten. He adds that this place was miraculously discovered to Bishop Theodore, who erected a superb basilica on the same spot.
