Blessed Nicholas of Longobardi

Nicholas of Longobardi was an Italian peasant who joined the Minims, where his piety and miracles drew admiration. Although not a priest due to a lack of formal education, he led a life of austerity before dying in Rome in 1709. He was beatified by Pius VI in 1756.

    Origins and vocation

    Nicolas, a peasant of modest origin and without education, entered the Order of Minims where he dedicated himself to a life of piety.

    Nicolas of Longobardi was a poor peasant whom God was pleased to raise to high holiness. He was born on January 16, 1649; his parents being poor could not have him educated, but they taught him to love God; he entered the Order of Min ims, but, for lac k of learning, could not be raised to the priesthood. His austerities, his piety, and his miracles soon made him the admiration of all Italy; he made the pilgrimage to Rome and Lor eto, an d died on February 12, 1709, while pronouncing these words: "To paradise! to paradise!" Pius VI b eatifi ed him on September 12, 1756. His body is preserved in a marble urn under one of the altars of the church of Saint-François-de-Paule, in Ro me.
