Saint Framechilde, mother of Saint Austreberte , came from a powerful family in the land of the Germans, and she married Ba defroy, a noble lord of the court of Dagobert II.
The ancient hagiographers unite these two names and say that Badefroy and Saint Framechilde were "both of very high virtue and great wisdom of conduct, firm in the faith, remarkable for their charity and their love of justice, nourishing their souls with the holy hopes of religion, and making it a duty and a joy to help the poor of Jesus Christ."
The vocation of Saint Austrebertha
Framechilde supports the vocation of her daughter Austrebertha, confirmed by a prophetic vision, despite the initial opposition of her husband Badefroy.
The life of Saint Austrebert ha, their daughter, informs us of the momentary opposition she encountered regarding her plan to consecrate her virginity to God: Badefroy must have been the principal and perhaps the sole author of this. As for the blessed Framechilde, she could recognize, in these entreaties of her daughter, the truth of a vision she had experienced, it is said, before her birth, in which she was told that the child she carried in her womb would draw many souls to Jesus Christ. This word did, in fact, have its complete fulfillment, beginning from the day when Austrebertha withdrew to the monastery of Port, near Abbeville.
Death, burial, and posterity of the relics
Died around 685, she was buried in Marconne. Her relics, dispersed between Montreuil and Hesdin, suffered the troubles of the Revolution before being authenticated in the 19th century.
Nothing more is known of the life of Saint Framechilde, who died on the seventeenth day of May, around the year 685: she was buried in the church of Marconne, which she had built herself. Her body was raised from the ground in 1839, by Bauduin, Bishop of Thérouanne. Her relics rested in the abbey of Montreuil-sur-Mer, founded by Saint Austreberte: a portion was also kept in the collegiate and parish church of Hesdin. The reliquary of Montreuil was destroyed on the 29th Vendémiaire, Year II: some bones had been removed from it, which are still venerated today in the parish church of that city, and which were authenticated in 1893 and 1885 by Mgr de la Tour d'Auvergne, Bishop of Amiens. Saint Framechilde is honored on May 17. In the diocese of Amiens, upon which Marconne formerly depended, and which is currently part of the diocese of Arras, Saint Frameuze was especially invoked for hea daches.
