Blessed John Angel Porro

A religious of the Servite Order born into a noble Milanese family, John Angelus Porro lived for twenty years as a hermit on Monte Senario. Known for his humility and his catechetical work among the poor, he spent his final days in Milan in an isolated cell. His cult was officially recognized by the popes in the 18th century.

    Youth and eremitic vocation

    Born into a noble family in the Milanese region, John-Angel Porro joined the Servite Order before retiring to Mount Senario to lead an austere life as a hermit.

    Our Blessed one w as born to a noble family in the Milanese region. His youth passed in great innocence of manners, and he concluded it by entering the Serv ite Order. From th en on, he was seen advancing rapidly in virtue, and, soon promoted to Holy Orders, he fulfilled their functions with marvelous holiness. His great attraction was for silence and prayer; in order to devote himself to their practice in a more perfect way, he retired to Mount Senario and em braced the a ustere life of the hermits who had established their dwelling there. After having led this life of retreat for twenty years, he was chosen as superior of the hermitage. But this office was not to his liking, and, after a few months, he went to hide in one of the caves of the mountain. Completely separated from the world in this deserted place, he spent all his time praying and meditating. Continually occupied with the memory of the Savior's passion and the sorrows of the Blessed Virg in, he treate d his body harshly, subjecting it to austere mortifications.

    Responsibilities and influence

    Despite his taste for solitude, he assumed the duties of superior, reformed the discipline of his order, and dedicated himself to the instruction of the poor between Florence and Siena.

    His holiness did not take long to be discovered, and his superior entrusted him with important duties, which he discharged to general satisfaction and edification. His examples contributed powerfully to establishing perfect regularity in the Orde r of the Servites, and the novices who came from his hands carried his spirit and sentiments everywhere. Placed again at the head of one of the houses of his Order, he made piety flourish throughout the country located between Fl orence a nd S iena. He worked on the instruction of the poor through good catechisms. The miracles he performed and the acts of his ardent charity soon caused him to be venerated as a Saint.
