SAINT PALLADIUS, BISHOP OF AUXERRE (658).
Accession to the Episcopate
Formerly abbot of Saint-Germain, Palladius was elected bishop of Auxerre in 622 by the people due to his wisdom and charity.
Saint Palladius was first abbot of Saint-Germai n: his wisdom and his tenderness for the poor designated him for the choice of the people when, in 622, it was necessary to appoint a successor to Saint Desiderius.
Major works and foundations
He embellished the Saint-Étienne cathedral and founded or relocated monasteries, notably Saint-Julien for women and Saint-Eusèbe for men.
The principal acts of his episcopate were: the embellishment of the church of Saint-Étienne; the translation, outside the city walls, of the ancient monastery of Saint-Julien, in which he established nuns and to which he gave lands for the support of a large number of the poor (644).
He also raised a monastery for men, on a small eminence to the S.W. of Auxerre, un der the invocation of Saint Eu sebius, Bish op of Vercel li: the church was adorned, by his care, with mosaics where neither gold nor pure crystal were spared.
Death and recognition of the cult
After 36 years of episcopate, he died in 658 and was buried at Saint-Eusèbe; he was officially canonized by Bishop Gui in 945.
He attended several councils held in his time and died, full of merits, on April 10, 658, after thirty-six years and a few months of episcopate. He was buried in the chu rch of Saint-Eusèbe w here numerous miracles glorified his tomb: Bishop Gu i canonized him on July 30, 945.
Ecclesiastical discipline and legacy
His acts testify to the absence of strict enclosure for certain religious women and the invention of endowment foundations for the clergy.
Writers who have dealt with ecclesiastical discipline have observed two things in the acts of the pontificate of Saint Palladius: the first is that religious women—except for those subject to the rule of Saint Caesarius—were not cloistered, since he ordered those of the monastery of Saint-Julien to go in procession to the cathedral every Thursday; the second is that, to make the cult of Saint Germanus more pomp ous, he found ed an annual endowment of one hundred sous payable on that day to the canons of the cathedral. This is, it is said, the first example of foundations of this kind.
