Biography
Born in 1631 in southern Poland, Stanislaus Papczyński was initially a Piarist religious before leaving that order to found his own congregation, and died in 1701 in Góra Kalwaria.
Stanislaus Papczyński was born on May 18, 1631, in Podegrodzie, near Stary Sącz, in southern Poland (Archdiocese of Kraków), and received the name John (Jan) at his baptism. The youngest of a large family, he pursued his studies in colleges run by the Piarists and the Jesuits, despite the wars and epidemics that troubled the region. On July 2, 1654, he entered the Order of Poor Clerics Regular of the Mother of God (Piarists), taking the religious name Stanislaus of Jesus and Mary, and pronounced his vows on July 22, 1656; he was ordained a priest on March 12, 1661. A renowned preacher and sought-after spiritual director, he nevertheless left the Piarists on December 11, 1670, having been dispensed from his vows, in order to follow a specific vocation focused on the cult of the Immaculate Conception. He then dedicated the last three decades of his life to founding and organizing his new community. He passed away on September 17, 1701, at the convent of Góra Kalwaria ("New Jerusalem"), where he is buried in the church of the Cenacle of the Lord.
Life and Work
Stanislaus Papczyński is the founder of the Congregation of Marian Clerics of the Immaculate Conception, the first male religious order in Poland, to which he assigned a threefold purpose.
The masterpiece of Stanislaus Papczyński is the foundation of the Congregation of Marian Clerics of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, the first male religious order born in Poland. Having taken the white habit in honor of the immaculate purity of Mary, he gathered hermits in the forest of Korabiew, near Skierniewice; this first house received ecclesiastical approval from the bishop on October 24, 1673. The community was erected as an order of diocesan right on April 21, 1679, and then obtained pontifical approval on October 24, 1699, under the pontificate of Innocent XII, who granted it the Rule of the Ten Virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Papczyński set a threefold purpose for his institute: to propagate the cult of the Immaculate Conception, to pray for the souls in purgatory—particularly those of soldiers fallen in war and victims of epidemics—, and to provide pastoral aid to spiritually neglected populations. A prolific author, he left behind several spiritual works, including the Templum Dei Mysticum (The Mystical Temple of God), which presents Christian holiness as an interior temple consecrated to God.
Journey toward holiness
His spirituality, centered on the Immaculate Conception and concern for the deceased, was marked by a "vow of blood" and an intense life of penance and charity.
The spirituality of Stanisław Papczyński is rooted in a fervent devotion to the Immaculate Conception, which he saw as "the heart of Christianity," more than two centuries before this mystery was defined as a dogma in 1854. As early as 1670, he made a "vow of blood," committing himself to give his life if necessary to defend the belief in the immaculate conception of Mary. His piety was accompanied by a deep concern for the souls in purgatory: according to his biographers, he had a vision of many deceased persons imploring his help, which led him to impose on his confreres prayer for the dead, particularly soldiers and victims of plagues. A man of austerity, attentive to social injustices, and an esteemed educator and preacher, he emphasized "virtue and instruction." The Church recognized the heroic nature of his virtues on June 13, 1992, under the pontificate of John Paul II, paving the way for his beatification. His reputation for holiness, supported by his writings and the influence of his congregation, has been maintained through the centuries despite the vicissitudes of the order.
Beatification and canonization
Beatified in 2007 at the Licheń sanctuary for Benedict XVI and canonized on June 5, 2016, by Pope Francis, Stanisław Papczyński is celebrated on May 18.
The cause of Stanisław Papczyński, introduced long ago and then resumed in the 20th century, led to the recognition of the heroic nature of his virtues on June 13, 1992. He was beatified on September 16, 2007, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń, in Poland, by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone acting on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. The miracle accepted for the beatification was the unexplained resumption of a pregnancy after a medically confirmed miscarriage: the fetus of Urszula Markowska, declared dead in March 2000, regained full vitality and the child was born at term. Pope Francis approved a second miracle on January 21, 2016—the unexpected recovery of a young woman suffering from bilateral pneumonia complicated by acute respiratory distress, multi-organ failure, and septic shock. The canonization was celebrated in St. Peter's Square in Rome on June 5, 2016, at the same time as that of the Swedish religious sister Maria Elisabetta Hesselblad. His liturgical feast is set for May 18, the anniversary of his birth, with September 17, the day of his death, also being commemorated by his congregation.
Spirituality and heritage
His legacy endures through the Marians of the Immaculate Conception, present on several continents, and he is invoked in particular as a protector of the unborn.
The legacy of Stanisław Papczyński continues above all through the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception (Marian Fathers, M.I.C.), which he founded. After a serious crisis at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when the order nearly disappeared, the congregation was renewed starting in 1909 by Blessed George Matulaitis (Jurgis Matulaitis) and experienced a new expansion; it is present today in many countries on several continents and remains dedicated to devotion to the Immaculate Conception, prayer for the deceased, and the apostolate. Due to the circumstances surrounding his own birth and his attention to the most vulnerable, the saint is readily invoked as a protector of the unborn; he is also presented as an intercessor for children with learning difficulties. The sanctuary of Góra Kalwaria, where his relics rest, remains a place of pilgrimage linked to his memory, as does the sanctuary of Licheń, the setting of his beatification. His canonization in 2016 revived the attention paid to this major figure of Polish Marian spirituality.
