    Biography

The life of Pier Giorgio Frassati, from his birth in Turin into a bourgeois family to his early death due to poliomyelitis.

Pier Giorgio Frassati was born on April 6, 1901, in Turin, Italy, into an influential family of the Piedmontese upper bourgeoisie. His father, Alfredo Frassati, was an agnostic statesman, a senator of the Kingdom of Italy, and the founder-director of the prestigious liberal daily newspaper La Stampa. His mother, Adelaide Ametis, was a renowned painter whose religious practice was conventional and strict. Pier Giorgio grew up alongside his younger sister, Luciana, born in 1902, who would be his closest companion in life and studies.

Despite a family environment not conducive to mystical fervor, Pier Giorgio developed a personal and ardent faith very early on. After academic difficulties in the public system, notably a failure in Latin, he was enrolled at the Social Institute of Turin, run by the Jesuits. It was in this setting that he began to receive Communion daily and became actively involved in the Conferences of Saint Vincent de Paul.

In 1918, he turned toward studies in mechanical engineering with a specialization in mining at the Royal Polytechnic of Turin. His ambition was not to make a fortune, but to serve the most destitute: he wished to become a mining engineer to "serve Christ among the miners," one of the most exploited working classes of the time.

At the end of June 1925, as he was preparing to take his final university exams, he contracted fulminant poliomyelitis, likely during his charitable visits to the sick in the slums of Turin. The gravity of his condition initially went unnoticed by his family, who were then preoccupied with the agony of his paternal grandmother. Pier Giorgio passed away on July 4, 1925, at the age of 24, after six days of terrible suffering endured in discretion and abandonment. His funeral, celebrated on July 6, was a revelation for his parents: an immense crowd of the poor, beggars, and marginalized people of Turin filled the streets to accompany the coffin of the one they called their benefactor.

    * **Charitable action**: From the age of 17, he joined the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. He dedicated his free time and financial resources to visiting the destitute families, the sick, and the homeless of Turin. He did not hesitate to give his own clothes or shoes to the needy and to carry their modest belongings himself during evictions. * **Associative and political commitment**: An active member of the Italian Catholic University Federation (FUCI) within the "Cesare Balbo" circle, Catholic Action, and the Association of Young Catholic Workers, he also became involved in politics. In 1920, he joined the Italian People's Party (PPI) founded by Don Luigi Sturzo, promoting Christian democracy. A resolute opponent of Benito Mussolini's fascism, he actively participated in demonstrations and was arrested by the police in Rome in September 1921 during a Catholic youth gathering. * **The Third Order of Saint Dominic**: Attracted by the figure of Saint Catherine of Siena and the sermons of Savonarola, he was admitted into the Third Order of Saint Dominic (Dominican laity) on May 28, 1922, at the church of San Domenico in Turin, taking the name "Fra Girolamo." * **The Company of Shady Types (Società dei Tipi Loschi)**: On May 18, 1924, during a mountain excursion, he founded this informal association with his closest friends. Under a joyful and prankish appearance (Pier Giorgio used the pseudonym "Robespierre"), this group aimed to seal an unfailing spiritual friendship, to pray for one another, and to encourage each other to strive for holiness.

After an investigation, these accusations were recognized as completely unfounded, allowing the cause to resume its course. * **Exhumation and incorrupt body**: In 1981, during the exhumation of his remains as part of the canonization process, his body was discovered perfectly intact and incorrupt. For him, service to the poor was inseparable from the Eucharist: "Jesus visits me in Holy Communion every morning, and I return the visit in the poorest way possible by visiting his poor." * **"Verso l'alto" (Towards the heights)**: A great enthusiast of the mountains, mountaineering, and skiing, he loved to contemplate the greatness of God from the peaks of the Alps.
