Biography
Origins, childhood, and vocation of Francinaina Cirer Carbonell in Sencelles.
Francinaina Cirer Carbonell (in religion Sister Françoise-Anne of the Virgin of Sorrows) was born on June 1, 1781, in Sencelles, a village on the island of Mallorca, Spain. She was the youngest of six children of Juan Cirer and Juana María Carbonell, humble and pious farmers. Baptized on the very day of her birth, she received a solid Christian education within her home. Although she never attended school and remained illiterate her entire life, she manifested a profound spiritual intelligence and active charity from an early age, readily sharing her food with other shepherd children. At the age of eight, she experienced a significant mystical event: during a fainting spell, she had a vision of hell that instilled in her a holy fear of God and a desire to work for the salvation of souls. From her adolescence, Francinaina felt the call to religious life and wished to enter the Convent of La Piedad in Palma. However, her father firmly opposed it. In a spirit of obedience, she accepted this decision as the expression of the divine will and chose to lead a consecrated life within her own family home. In 1798, at the age of 17, she was admitted into the Third Order of Saint Francis. Later, in 1813, she also joined the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament of her parish. Her life was marked by successive bereavements: her brothers died prematurely between 1788 and 1804, her mother passed away in 1807, and her father died in 1810. As the sole heir to the family estate, she found herself alone at the age of 40. She then transformed her house into a refuge for the needy, the sick, and orphans. Affectionately nicknamed "tia Xiroia" (the joyful aunt) by the inhabitants of Sencelles, she became an essential figure of charity and spiritual counsel throughout the region.
Life and Work
Foundation of the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of Mallorca.
The heart of the work of Francinaina Cirer Carbonell lies in the foundation of the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of Mallorca (Hermanas de la Caridad). For several decades, Francinaina led a life of informal service, but her desire for a consecrated community life remained intact. It was not until the age of 70, with the support and advice of her parish priest, Father Joan Molinas, that she took the step. On December 23, 1850, she laid the foundations of her community by transforming her own house in Sencelles into a convent. She was joined in this adventure by two devoted companions: Magdalena Cirer Bennàssar and Antonia Capó Amengual. On December 7, 1851, Francinaina and her companions pronounced their religious vows. She then took the religious name of Sister Francinaina of the Virgin of Sorrows (Francinaina de los Dolores de María). Despite her illiteracy, she was designated as the first superior of the community due to her innate spiritual wisdom and moral authority. The mission of the institute was clearly defined: the care of the sick at home, the Christian education of poor young girls and the teaching of the catechism, as well as assistance to the poor through the distribution of food and material aid. Under her prudent leadership, the small community organized itself and laid the foundations for a lasting work that would subsequently extend to the entire island of Mallorca and beyond.
Path to Holiness
Mystical experiences, ecstasies, levitations, and the holy death of Francinaina.
The life of Francinaina was marked by an extraordinary mystical union with God. Although she strove to hide the graces she received, many witnesses—including her community companions and the inhabitants of Sencelles—reported frequent supernatural phenomena. She experienced profound spiritual ecstasies, often accompanied by physical levitations. Sometimes, it was enough to mention the name of God or speak of heavenly realities for her to rise from the ground, remaining suspended in the air in a posture of prayer. She also benefited from visions of angels playing celestial music. Despite these extraordinary manifestations, Francinaina maintained total humility, always considering herself a simple and unworthy servant of the Lord. She endured physical trials and misunderstandings with patience. On February 27, 1855, after dedicating her final strength to the service of the poor and the consolidation of her young congregation, she was struck by a stroke and passed away holily in Sencelles at the age of 73. Her funeral was attended by a vast crowd of faithful who came from all over the island to honor the one they already considered a saint. Her body rests in the chapel of the Sisters of Charity convent in Sencelles.

Spirituality and legacy
The spirituality of the Blessed and the international expansion of her congregation.
The spirituality of Blessed Francinaina is characterized by an absolute evangelical simplicity, a total trust in Providence, and a boundless love for the most destitute. Having had no formal education, her theology was that of the heart, nourished by the contemplation of the Passion of Christ, Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Holy Trinity. She knew how to embody an eminently practical and operational charity, seeing the face of Christ in every sick person and every indigent. The legacy of Francinaina remains alive through the congregation she founded. The Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of Mallorca continue today to exercise their ministry of assistance, education, and healthcare. Beyond Spain, the congregation has expanded internationally and is active in Peru, Honduras, and Burundi. In 2005, the Island Council of Mallorca proclaimed Francinaina Cirer Carbonell an "illustrious daughter" of the island, thus consecrating her major historical and spiritual role in the collective memory of the Balearic archipelago.
