María Rafols Bruna was born on November 5, 1781, in Vilafranca del Penedès, Catalonia. Coming from a modest but deeply Christian family, she studied in Barcelona after the death of her father in 1794. There, she began visiting the sick at the Hospital of the Holy Cross. In 1803, during a plague epidemic, she dedicated herself to the service of the sick and met Father Juan Bonal, who became her spiritual director.

Foundation of the congregation, heroism during the sieges of Zaragoza, and political trials.
In 1804, María Rafols co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Anne in Zaragoza to manage the Hospital of Our Lady of Grace. During the Spanish War of Independence, she demonstrated exceptional heroism by saving thousands of sick and orphaned people during the bombardments and by negotiating with Marshal Lannes. Later, she was falsely accused of political conspiracy, imprisoned, and then exiled for six years before returning to Zaragoza, where she died on August 30, 1853.
Path to holiness
Recognition of her heroic virtues and stages of the beatification process.
Proclaimed "Heroine of Charity" in 1908, her cause for beatification was introduced in 1931. After a suspension in 1944 due to false prophetic writings wrongly attributed to her, the cause resumed in 1980 under John Paul II. Her heroic virtues were officially recognized on July 6, 1991, conferring upon her the title of Venerable.
