Biography
Birth and youth of Dorotea Chávez Orozco in Mexico.
Blessed Mary Vincent of Saint Dorothy (María Vicenta de Santa Dorotea), born Dorotea Chávez Orozco on February 6, 1867, in Cotija, in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, was the youngest of four children born to Luis Chávez and Benigna de Jesús Orozco. Raised in a deeply Christian family, she manifested from her childhood a particular devotion to the Child Jesus. Around the age of nine, her family moved to Guadalajara, settling in the poor neighborhood of Mexicaltzingo.
Life and Work
Hospitalization, religious calling, and the foundation of the Servants of the Most Holy Trinity and the Poor.
In 1892, at the age of 25, Dorotea fell seriously ill with pleurisy and was admitted to the Most Holy Trinity Hospital, managed by the ladies of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Touched by the charity of the caregivers, she returned in July 1892 to dedicate herself to the work. On December 25, 1895, she took private vows. On May 12, 1905, she officially founded the congregation of the "Servants of the Poor," which later became the "Servants of the Most Holy Trinity and the Poor." She made her canonical profession on December 3, 1911, under the name Sister Maria Vicenta of Saint Dorothy. Elected Superior General in 1913, she led the institute for thirty years, enduring religious persecutions in Mexico.
Journey toward holiness
Decline in her health, peaceful death in 1949, and opening of her cause for beatification.
From 1942, Mother Maria Vicenta's health declined sharply, marked by a progressive loss of sight. In July 1949, she suffered a heart attack. After receiving the anointing of the sick and confessing to Bishop José Garibi Rivera, she passed away peacefully on July 30, 1949, at the Hospital of the Most Holy Trinity in Guadalajara. The beatification process opened in Guadalajara in 1966, and Pope John Paul II declared her venerable on December 21, 1991.
Beatification and canonization
Recognition of a miracle and beatification by Pope John Paul II in 1997.
For her beatification, a diocesan inquiry was conducted into an unexplained healing attributed to her intercession. This miracle was validated by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints on October 2, 1992, approved by the medical board in 1996, and by the theologians in 1997. The official decree was signed by Pope John Paul II on July 7, 1997. She was beatified by John Paul II on November 9, 1997, in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican. Her liturgical feast is set for July 30.
