Biography
The youth of Luigi Maria Monti in Bovisio, his early spiritual commitment, his unjust imprisonment, and his novitiate with the Sons of Mary Immaculate.
Luigi Maria Monti was born on July 24, 1825, in Bovisio into a family of modest farmers. Orphaned of his father at age 12, he worked as a cabinetmaker. He founded the "Company of the Sacred Heart of Jesus" (or "Company of the Brothers") to gather young artisans and farmers in a life of prayer and devotion. In 1846, he took private vows of chastity and obedience. Falsely accused of political conspiracy in 1851 under the Austrian regime, he spent 72 days in prison before being cleared. He then entered as a novice with the Sons of Mary Immaculate, training as a nurse and dedicating himself heroically during the cholera epidemic of 1855 in Brescia.
Life and Work
The foundation of the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Conception, its expansion towards the care of the sick and the reception of orphans.
On September 8, 1857, Luigi Maria Monti founded the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Conception in Rome with Cipriano Pezzini, establishing themselves at the Santo Spirito Hospital. He obtained a diploma in phlebotomy from the Sapienza University of Rome. Appointed Superior General in 1877, he led the institute through epidemics. In 1882, he expanded the mission to the reception and education of orphans, opening homes in Saronno in 1886 and then in Cantù. His pedagogy was based on the "fatherhood of the educator." He conceived his congregation as a community of equal brothers, whether laymen or priests. Exhausted and nearly blind, he died in Saronno on October 1, 1900.
