    Biography

Youth and vocation of Matilde Téllez Robles in the face of family opposition.

Matilde Téllez Robles was born on May 30, 1841, in Robledillo de la Vera, in the province of Cáceres, Spain. She was the second of four children of Félix Téllez Gómez, a notary, and Basilea Robles Ruiz. In November 1841, the family moved to Béjar. From her adolescence, Matilde felt a call to consecrate herself to God, but her father firmly opposed it, limiting her prayer time and forcing her to participate in worldly activities. Faced with her gentleness and constancy, he eventually gave in. At 23, she became president of the Association of the Daughters of Mary in Béjar, dedicating herself to the poor and the sick.

    Life and Work

The difficult foundation of the congregation and its expansion.

Inspired by Eucharistic adoration, Matilde planned to found a new institute uniting contemplation and action. On March 19, 1875, she began community life in Béjar with a single companion, María Briz, in the "House of Nazareth," where they welcomed orphans. On April 23, 1876, the Bishop of Plasencia authorized the work under the name "Adorers of Jesus and Daughters of Mary Immaculate." In 1884, the institute became of diocesan right under the name "Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church." After the death of María Briz in 1885 during a cholera epidemic, Mother Matilde continued the expansion of the work to Cáceres, Trujillo, Villanueva de Córdoba, and Don Benito.
