María del Carmen González-Ramos García-Prieto de Muñoz (in religion Mary of Mount Carmel of the Child Jesus) was born on June 30, 1834, in Antequera, Spain. Coming from a wealthy Christian family, she was the sixth of nine children. From her childhood, she distinguished herself by her piety and charity toward the poor. At 22, she married Joaquín Muñoz del Caño on May 9, 1857. This marriage was a painful trial due to her husband's violent character and dissolute life. For twenty years, she showed heroic patience. Her husband eventually converted and asked for her forgiveness before dying in 1881, leaving her a widow and childless.
Life and Work

Other women joined her, giving birth to the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Hearts. On May 8, 1884, they moved into the convent of Our Lady of Victory in Antequera. She pronounced her temporary vows on September 17, 1884, and then her perpetual profession on February 20, 1889, under the name of Mary of Mount Carmel of the Child Jesus, becoming the first superior general. The institute developed rapidly with schools, dispensaries, and hospitals. She stepped down from leadership in 1897 and died of typhus on November 9, 1899.
