    Biography

    Birth at sea, studies in Buenos Aires, and priestly ordination of Jacinto Vera.

    Jacinto Vera y Durán was born on July 3, 1813, on the high seas, aboard a ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean, while his parents were emigrating to Uruguay. After his baptism in Brazil, his family settled in Uruguay. At the age of 19, he felt the call to the priesthood and left to study in Buenos Aires with the Jesuits from 1836 to 1841. Ordained a priest in 1841, he subsequently served as a parish priest in Canelones for 17 years.

    Episcopal ministry, exile, and appointment as the first bishop of Montevideo.

    Appointed Apostolic Vicar of Uruguay in 1859, Jacinto Vera reorganized the local Church but faced tensions with the civil government, leading to his temporary exile in Buenos Aires. Consecrated titular bishop of Megara in 1865, he participated in the First Vatican Council. In 1878, he became the first bishop of the new diocese of Montevideo. He died on mission on May 6, 1881.

    On December 17, 2022, Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to his intercession: the healing of a 14-year-old girl in 1936. Jacinto Vera was beatified on May 6, 2023, at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo during a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Paulo Cezar Costa, becoming the first blessed native to Uruguay.
