Clemente Vismara was born on September 6, 1897, in Agrate Brianza, in Lombardy (Italy). The fifth child of a saddler and a seamstress, he became an orphan at the age of seven. Taken in by his family, he studied at the Villoresi College in Monza and then entered the seminary of Seveso in 1913. His formation was interrupted by the First World War: mobilized in 1916 as a private in the 80th Infantry Regiment, he fought on the Adamello and Mount Maio front. Demobilized in 1919 with the rank of sergeant-major and three medals for military valor, he decided to dedicate his life to peace and the Gospel.
