    Biography

    The life of Edvige Carboni, from her birth in Sardinia to her death in Rome.

    Edvige Carboni was born in the night between May 2 and 3, 1880, in Pozzomaggiore, Sardinia. The second of six children in a family of modest farmers, she manifested an early piety from childhood and made a private vow of chastity at the age of five. Although she desired to enter religious life, she renounced it to care for her sick family. In 1929, she left Sardinia for the Latium region and settled permanently in Rome in 1938, where she died suddenly of cardiac arrest on February 17, 1952.

    Edvige Carboni led a humble and self-effacing life as a laywoman, joining the Third Order of Saint Francis in 1906, as well as other confraternities such as the Daughters of Mary, the Confraternity of Carmel, the Honor Guard of the Sacred Heart, and later as a Salesian Cooperator. In Rome, she attended the Santa Maria Ausiliatrice parish daily. Her primary work lay in her silent dedication to the most destitute, caring for the sick, assisting the elderly, and making clothing for the poor. During the two World Wars, she multiplied her prayers and sacrifices for the victims.

    The spiritual journey of Edvige Carboni is marked by extraordinary mystical phenomena that she strove to hide out of humility. On July 14, 1911, she received the stigmata of the Passion of Christ. She also benefited from ecstasies, levitations, bilocations, and heavenly visions, while undergoing diabolical attacks. Subjected to a diocesan canonical inquiry in 1925, she responded with obedience and calm. The beatification process was opened in 1968, and Pope Francis declared her Venerable on May 4, 2017.

    The beatification of Edvige Carboni was made possible by the recognition of a miracle that occurred in 1954, concerning the unexplained healing of a man's severe foot infection following the intercession of Edvige. Pope Francis approved this miracle on November 7, 2018. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on June 15, 2019, in Pozzomaggiore, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu. Her mortal remains were transferred on May 25, 2019, to the parish church of San Giorgio Martire in Pozzomaggiore.
