Biography
Mariantonia Samà, born in 1875 in Calabria, spent most of her life bedridden following serious illnesses, becoming a model of faith and Christian resignation.
Mariantonia Samà was born on March 2, 1875, in Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio, in Calabria (Italy) [1.1.1]. Her father, Bruno Samà, died before her birth, leaving her alone with her mother, Marianna Vivino, in great poverty. During her childhood, she helped her mother with field work. At the age of eleven, after drinking contaminated water from a pond, she was struck by violent convulsions. In 1894, thanks to the help of a benefactress, she was taken to the Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno where she was healed before the statue of Saint Bruno. However, in 1896, she was struck again by a serious illness, probably a deforming arthritis or a neurological disorder, which paralyzed her completely. She spent the rest of her life, fifty-seven years, bedridden in a position reminiscent of that of a crucified person. She passed away holily on May 27, 1953, in her hometown.
Life and work
Despite her total immobility, Mariantonia transforms her room into a place of welcome, prayer, and counsel for many faithful.
Bedridden in a small, dark, and poor room, Mariantonia Samà does not withdraw into her suffering. She chooses to offer her immobility and her pains to Christ for the salvation of souls. In 1915, she makes private religious vows and begins to wear a black veil on her head, which earns her the nickname among the inhabitants of "la monachella di San Bruno" (the little nun of Saint Bruno). Her house quickly becomes a true spiritual sanctuary. Priests, religious, and many local faithful come to visit her to request her prayers, seek comfort, or obtain spiritual advice. She recites the Rosary three times a day with her visitors and receives Holy Communion daily. After her mother's death in 1920, she is supported by the charity of the inhabitants and by the Reparator Sisters of the Sacred Heart, sharing the little she receives with the most destitute.
Journey towards holiness
Mariantonia's life is characterized by a profound mystical union with the Passion of Christ and a constant reputation for holiness.
The spiritual journey of Mariantonia Samà rests upon a heroic acceptance of suffering, experienced not as a fatality, but as a mystical participation in the Passion of Christ. Her bed of pain becomes an altar of constant intercession. Her unalterable patience, the total absence of complaint, and her spiritual joy deeply strike all those who approach her. She constantly exhorts her visitors to keep absolute trust in Divine Providence and in the intercession of the Virgin Mary. Her reputation for holiness, already immense during her lifetime, has not ceased to grow after her death in 1953. The faithful continue to visit her tomb and to ask for her intercession, recognizing in her a holy soul entirely consumed by the love of God and neighbor.

On July 10, 2020, a decree approved a miracle attributed to her intercession: the unexplained healing of a woman suffering from severe and debilitating bilateral knee osteoarthritis, which occurred in Genoa on the night of December 12 to 13, 2004, after she had invoked the Servant of God. Mariantonia Samà was solemnly beatified on October 3, 2021, in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Catanzaro by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, representing Pope Francis. Spirituality and heritage

Blessed Mariantonia Samà leaves behind a powerful spiritual legacy, centered on the redemptive value of suffering offered with love. She shows that physical immobility is not an obstacle to a fruitful apostolic and mystical life. Her mortal remains, transferred on August 3, 2003, rest in the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio, where many pilgrims come to pray. She is particularly invoked by people suffering from chronic illnesses, paralysis, or joint pain. Her example, celebrated by Pope Francis during her beatification alongside Gaetana Tolomeo, reminds the contemporary Church that every human life, even one marked by the greatest fragility, possesses infinite dignity and spiritual fruitfulness.
