    Biography

    Youth and formation of Braulio María Corres Díaz de Cerio.

    Braulio María Corres Díaz de Cerio (born Pablo Corres Díaz de Cerio) was born on June 26, 1897, in Torralba del Río, Spain. The son of humble farmers, he entered the Apostolic School of Ciempozuelos at the age of thirteen. There, he received a solid formation, took the habit under the name of Brother Braulio María, pronounced his vows in 1916, and was ordained a priest on April 15, 1922, in El Escorial.

    Life and work

    Ministry at the Calafell Sanatorium and dedication to sick children.

    In 1931, Father Braulio María was transferred to the Maritime Sanatorium of Calafell, where he served as master of novices and provincial counselor. He cared for approximately 250 sick children. In 1936, faced with threats of persecution, he attempted in vain to transfer his novices to Marseille. After the requisition of the sanatorium by militiamen on July 24, 1936, he continued to provide care and prepared his community for martyrdom.

    Path to holiness

    The martyrdom of Father Braulio María and his companions in Calafell.

    On July 30, 1936, Father Braulio María distributed communion to his brothers and exhorted them to forgiveness. Arrested by the revolutionary committee, the fifteen religious of Calafell were taken to the place known as "Corral del Rión" to be executed. Father Braulio María gave absolution to his companions and died praying for his executioners. Fourteen companions were murdered with him that day. This martyrdom is part of a group of 71 Hospitallers murdered in Spain in 1936.

    Beatification and canonization

    Recognition of martyrdom and beatification by Pope John Paul II.

    The cause for beatification, unifying the processes of Barcelona and Madrid, was validated in 1986. The decree of martyrdom was signed on May 14, 1991. The solemn beatification ceremony was celebrated by Pope John Paul II on October 25, 1992, in Saint Peter's Square in Rome, highlighting their fidelity in the service of the sick.

    The spirituality of Blessed Braulio María Corres and his companions is based on the charism of hospitality of Saint John of God, characterized by the care of the sick and the forgiveness of persecutors. In 2014, the liturgical memory of this group was united with that of 23 other martyrs of the Order, set for October 25, although the Roman Martyrology commemorates them individually on July 30.
