    Lojze Grozde (Alojzij Grozde) was born on May 27, 1923, in Zgornje Vodale, a small village in the parish of Tržišče, in Slovenia. Born out of wedlock, his birth was initially a source of family rejection. Raised by his maternal grandparents and a very pious aunt, he was later sent to study in Ljubljana thanks to anonymous benefactors. A brilliant student at the classical high school, he distinguished himself through his literary talents.

    The life of Lojze Grozde was deeply marked by his religious commitment. At the age of 12, he attended the Eucharistic Congress in Ljubljana in 1935, which sparked in him a lasting love for the Eucharist. In high school, he became an active member of the Marian Congregation and Catholic Action, becoming a model of piety and apostolic zeal for his classmates. He chose to remain a layman to work within society.

    During the Second World War, Lojze remained firmly attached to his Catholic faith in the face of totalitarian ideologies. On January 1, 1943, while traveling to visit his family, he was arrested near Mirna by Tito's communist partisans. Finding a missal, 'The Imitation of Christ', and a booklet on Fatima in his possession, they suspected him of espionage. He was tortured and murdered that same day at the age of 19. His body was discovered on February 23, 1943.

    The beatification process opened in 1992. On March 27, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI recognized his martyrdom in odium fidei. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on June 13, 2010, in Celje by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone before 40,000 faithful. In 2011, his relics were transferred to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Zaplaz in Čatež.
