Biography
The youth of Teresina Elsa Mainetti, her religious vocation, and her entry into the Daughters of the Cross.
Born Teresina Elsa Mainetti on August 20, 1939, in Villatico, a hamlet of Colico in Lombardy, she was the tenth child of Stefano Mainetti and Marcellina Gusmeroli. Her mother passed away twelve days after her birth. Raised by her older sister Romilda and then by her father's second wife, she became aware of her mother's sacrifice. During a confession, a priest told her: "You must make your life something beautiful for others," which guided her toward religious life. In 1957, at the age of 18, she entered the postulancy of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross (Sisters of Saint Andrew) in Rome. She began her novitiate in February 1958, pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1959, under the name Sister Maria Laura, and her perpetual vows on August 25, 1964, in La Puye, France.
Life and Work
Sister Maria Laura's commitment to young people and families in difficulty in Italy.
Sister Maria Laura dedicated her life to the education and accompaniment of children, young people, and families in difficulty. She taught in several Italian cities: Vasto, Rome, Parma, and then settled in Chiavenna in 1984, where she became the community superior in 1987. There, she directed a boarding school for young girls and devoted herself to fragile and disoriented adolescents. Her congregation, founded in France by Saint André-Hubert Fournet and Saint Jeanne-Élisabeth Bichier des Âges, has as its charism evangelical simplicity and the service of the poor through teaching and the care of the sick.
Path to Holiness
The martyrdom of Sister Maria Laura, murdered by three teenagers in a satanic ambush.
On the evening of June 6, 2000, Sister Maria Laura was lured into an ambush by three teenagers from Chiavenna (Ambra Gianasso, Milena De Giambattista, and Veronica Pietrobelli) under the pretext of helping a pregnant girl. Fascinated by Satanism, they attacked her savagely on a dark path with stones and a knife. As she was dying, Sister Maria Laura knelt and prayed for her murderers, saying: "Lord, forgive them!"—words that would profoundly shake the three culprits.
