Saint Artemius of Sens

A nobleman married before becoming Bishop of Sens in 579, Saint Arthème is known for having converted the great Spanish criminal Bond. He died in 609 after thirty years of episcopate and was buried in the church of Saint-Pierre.

    Origins and episcopate

    Coming from the nobility, Arthème was married and a father before being consecrated bishop in 579.

    Coming from a noble family of the region, Arthème was bound by the ties of marriage before being promoted to episcopal functions, and had among his children the pious Eulosie who took the veil. The consecration of Arthème took place on April 23, 579.

    Conversion of Saint Bond

    Bishop Arthème guides the conversion of a Spanish criminal named Bond, who becomes a holy hermit on the banks of the Yonne.

    He received into public penance a Spaniard named Bon d (Baldus), a nd from a great criminal made him a great Saint. Until a few years ago, one could still see, on the left bank of the Yonne, at the summit of a mountain, the ruins of the hermitage where Saint Bond live d and died, after seven years of terrifying austerities.
