Biography
Youth and entry into the Society of Jesus of Victor Emilio Moscoso Cárdenas.
Salvador Víctor Emilio Moscoso Cárdenas was born on April 21, 1846, in Cuenca, Ecuador, into a wealthy and pious family. After beginning his law studies, he chose to follow his religious vocation and entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus on April 4, 1864. He pronounced his first vows in 1866.

After his priestly ordination in 1876 in Quito, Father Moscoso continued his formation in Europe (France and Spain) before teaching in Peru and then returning to Ecuador. In 1889, he was assigned to the Colegio San Felipe Neri in Riobamba, of which he became rector in 1892, distinguishing himself by his qualities as an educator and spiritual director.

During the Liberal Revolution led by Eloy Alfaro, the Church suffered severe persecution. On May 4, 1897, government troops stormed the Colegio San Felipe Neri in Riobamba, desecrating the chapel. Father Moscoso was discovered in prayer in his room and shot at point-blank range by the soldiers.
Beatification and canonization
Recognition of martyrdom and beatification by Pope Francis in 2019.
The cause for beatification was officially opened in 2000. On February 12, 2019, Pope Francis recognized his martyrdom in hatred of the faith. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on November 16, 2019, in Riobamba by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu. His liturgical feast is set for May 4.
