    Biography

Birth in Sardinia, youth marked by family bereavements, and entry into the Trappist monastery of Grottaferrata.

Maria Sagheddu was born on March 17, 1914, in Dorgali, Sardinia (Italy), into a family of shepherds. The fifth of eight children of Marcantonio Sagheddu and Caterina Cucca, she had an assertive and rebellious character during her youth. At 18, following the deaths of her father and her sister, she deepened her faith, became involved in Catholic Action, taught catechism, and served the poor. Under the guidance of her spiritual director, Father Basilio Meloni, she entered the Trappist monastery of Grottaferrata on September 30, 1935, taking the name Sister Maria Gabriella.

    Life and Work

A humble life in the monastery and the offering of her life for the unity of Christians under the influence of ecumenism.

In the monastery, Sister Maria Gabriella led a simple and humble life, marked by abandonment to the divine will. In 1938, encouraged by the Abbess Mother Maria Pia Gullini, who was sensitive to ecumenism and the initiatives of Paul Couturier for the unity of Christians, she felt an interior call to offer her life for this cause. With the agreement of her Abbess, she made the offering of herself for the unity of the Church.

Shortly after her offering, she contracted tuberculosis. She endured fifteen months of suffering with patience and joy, asking for her personal writings to be burned so that she might disappear completely. She died on April 23, 1939, at the age of 25. In 1957, during her exhumation, her body was discovered to be completely intact. Her remains now rest in the Chapel of Unity at the monastery of Vitorchiano.

The beatification process progressed thanks to the miraculous healing in 1960 of Sister Maria Pia Manno, a Benedictine nun from Alcamo who had become blind, after she sought the intercession of Sister Maria Gabriella. She was beatified on January 25, 1983, by Pope John Paul II in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, at the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
