    Biography

    Youth and vocation of Jules-Nicolas Rèche, born into a poor family in Lorraine.

    Jules-Nicolas Rèche was born on September 2, 1838, in Landroff, in the Moselle region. The eldest son of a poor family of nine children, he had to leave school at the age of 11 to work as a farmhand and then as a coachman. From 1859 to 1862, he worked as a carter in Charleville, where he discovered the Brothers of the Christian Schools by attending their evening classes. This encounter directed his vocation toward Christian education.

    Having entered the novitiate in 1862 under the name Brother Arnould, he was sent to Reims where he taught for fourteen years with patience and gentleness. During the war of 1870, he devoted himself as a nurse to care for the wounded, receiving the Bronze Cross. In 1877, he became director of the Reims novitiate in Thillois, then Director General of the Courlancy house in 1890, before passing away on October 23, 1890.
