    Biography

Birth in Barra, early piety, tragic white marriage, and entry into religious life with the Crucified Sisters.

Maria Grazia Tarallo was born on September 23, 1866, in Barra, near Naples. Coming from a Christian family, she made a private vow of virginity at the age of five and received her first communion at seven. Having become a seamstress, she wished to enter a convent, but her father opposed it and forced her to marry Raffaele Aruta in 1889. Stricken with tuberculosis on the very day of the wedding, her husband died nine months later without the religious marriage having been consummated. Freed, she entered the monastery of the Crucified Sisters of the Eucharistic Jesus in Barra on June 1, 1891, with her sister Drusiana.
