    Biography

Birth and youth of Mária Magdolna Bódi in Hungary within a modest family.

Mária Magdolna Bódi (affectionately nicknamed "Magdi") was born on August 8, 1921, in Szigliget, Hungary, into a family of modest agricultural laborers (cselédek). Her parents, János Bódi and Mária Nika, could not contract a civil or religious marriage due to the lack of official identity documents for the father, who had arrived as a refugee after the Treaty of Trianon. As a result, Magdi and her two brothers, Gyula and János, were registered as "illegitimate" children (born out of wedlock). She was baptized on August 15, 1921, the feast of the Assumption, at St. Michael's Church in Badacsonytördemic.

Due to their precarious financial situation, the family had to move seven times. They finally settled in Köveskál, where Magdi attended primary school. Although she did not receive religious education at home, she followed the catechism classes at school with fervor. Her intelligence, early piety, and attention to the poor were quickly noticed by her teachers. After her first communion and confirmation, she became actively involved with children by joining the "Szívgárda" (the Heart Guard), an association dedicated to the religious education of the youngest through devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

    Life and Work

Magdi's lay vocation as a worker, her vow of chastity, and her charitable commitment.

Desiring to dedicate her life to God, Magdi wished to enter a religious congregation. However, the canon law of the time forbade her entry due to the irregular marital situation of her parents. Accepting this trial with humility, she chose to live out her vocation in the world.

In 1939, she was hired as a worker at the Nitrokémia Rt. chemical factory in Fűzfőgyártelep (Balatonfűzfő). Despite working three-shift rotations, she managed to receive communion daily. Her gentle attitude, modesty, and common-sense responses to the anti-religious mockery of some colleagues quickly earned her the respect of all.

On October 26, 1941, during the feast of Christ the King, she made a private vow of perpetual chastity before the altar of the Sacred Heart Church in Balatonfűzfő. In 1942, she joined the Marian Congregation and became actively involved in the Association of Catholic Working Girls (Katolikus Dolgozó Lányok Szövetsége), where she became a group leader, offering moral and spiritual support to her companions.

Magdi distinguished herself through boundless charity. She organized collections to clothe orphaned children and refused a professional promotion (and the associated salary increase) in favor of a mother, believing that the latter had a more urgent need for it.

    Path to Holiness

Magdi's martyrdom in 1945, defending her chastity against a Soviet soldier.

In 1944, as the Second World War raged and the front approached Hungary, Magdi expressed several times the desire to die young to give her life for Christ and serve as an example to the youth. In 1945, on March 23, Red Army troops entered the village of Litér. Magdi was then at the entrance of a shelter (bunker) in the courtyard of a local manor, alongside her mother and other women and children. Two armed Soviet soldiers approached. One of them ordered Magdi to follow him inside the bunker with the obvious intention of sexually assaulting her. Magdi resisted fiercely and, to defend herself, wounded the soldier with a small pair of scissors she kept in her pocket. Taking advantage of a moment of respite, she escaped and warned the other women to flee, saying: "Annuska, flee, for it will be your turn. I am dying... Mother, leave here, I am dying now!" The soldier, furious, pursued her, climbed onto the roof of the bunker, and shot her several times from behind. After the second gunshot, Magdi raised her hands to the sky and cried out: "My Lord! My King! Take me with you!" ("Uram, Királyom! Végy magadhoz!"). Struck by six bullets, the last of which pierced her chest, she collapsed and died instantly at the age of 23. Her body, stripped of her few personal effects (watch, necklace), was collected by her father, who wrapped her in a blanket and gave her a temporary burial in the Litér cemetery, where she still rests.

    Beatification and canonization

The long process of beatification, interrupted by the communist regime and finalized in 2025.

The beatification process was initiated as early as 1945 by Bishop József Mindszenty, then Bishop of Veszprém. However, the advent of the communist regime in Hungary brutally interrupted the procedure. The process was relaunched in 1990 by Bishop József Szendi. The beatification process was relaunched in 1990 by Bishop József Szendi. On May 23, 2024, Pope Francis officially recognized her martyrdom in hatred of the faith (in odium fidei). Initially scheduled for April 26, 2025, the beatification ceremony was postponed due to the death of Pope Francis, which occurred on Easter Monday 2025. The new pope, Leo XIV, set the new date for the celebration for September 6, 2025. The solemn beatification was celebrated on that day at the Veszprém Arena by Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, in the presence of thousands of faithful and numerous bishops.
