    Biography

    Birth and youth of Victoire Rasoamanarivo in Antananarivo, her education with the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny, and her baptism in 1863.

    Victoire Rasoamanarivo was born in 1848 in Antananarivo into a powerful aristocratic family of the Merina ethnic group. The daughter of Rainandriantsilavo and Rambahinoro, she grew up respecting Malagasy traditions. In 1861, following the accession of King Radama II who restored religious freedom, she joined the first Catholic school for girls run by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny. Despite family pressure, she chose the Catholic faith and received baptism on November 1, 1863, at Andohalo, followed by her first communion and confirmation in 1864.

    Her difficult marriage to Radriaka, the founding of the Daughters of the Holy Virgin, and her crucial role as guardian of the Malagasy Church during the war.

    Forced into marriage with her cousin Radriaka in 1864, Victoire patiently endured her husband's alcoholism and infidelity, refusing divorce in the name of the indissolubility of marriage. In 1876, she founded the association of the Zanak'i Masina Maria. When the Franco-Malagasy War broke out in 1883 and the missionaries were expelled, she courageously took the lead of the Catholic community with Brother Raphaël-Louis Rafiringa, keeping the churches open and protecting the faithful. In 1888, she herself baptized her repentant husband on his deathbed.

    Journey toward holiness

    Her life as a widow dedicated to prayer and the poor, her illness, and her holy death in 1894.

    Having become a widow, Victoire withdrew from the court, adopted austere mourning, and dedicated her life and fortune to the poor, the sick, and the lepers. Her health declined starting in 1890, but she continued her works of charity until her last breath. She passed away on August 21, 1894, at the age of 46. Initially buried in the family tomb, her remains were transferred to Ambohipo in 1961, then solemnly placed in the chapel of Andohalo in 1993.

    The beatification process began in 1931. Declared Venerable in 1983, she was beatified on April 30, 1989, by Pope John Paul II in Antananarivo before 300,000 people, becoming the first Malagasy blessed. The miracle accepted for her beatification was the sudden stopping of a violent bush fire threatening the village of Antsirabe, after a catechist presented her image to the flames.
