    Biography

Birth, childhood, and education of Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Santiago in Puerto Rico.

Carlos Manuel Cecilio Rodríguez Santiago, affectionately nicknamed "Charlie," was born on November 22, 1918, in Caguas, Puerto Rico. The second of five children of Manuel Baudilio Rodríguez and Herminia Santiago, he grew up in a deeply Christian home. After a devastating fire at the age of six, the family moved in with his maternal grandparents, where his grandmother Alejandrina Esterás influenced him profoundly. Despite a severe ulcerative colitis contracted at the age of nine, he continued his studies at the Catholic school in Caguas, but his fragile health forced him to drop out of university in his second year.

    Life and Work

Carlos Manuel's commitment as a layman and pioneer of the liturgical movement.

Unable to become a priest due to his illness, Carlos Manuel committed himself fully as a layman. While working as an office clerk, he dedicated himself to teaching the faith and to the liturgy. Having become a Benedictine oblate, he founded the Círculo de Liturgia (Liturgical Circle) and the Centro de Cultura Cristiana (Center for Christian Culture). He organized training sessions, published the journals Liturgia and Cultura Cristiana at his own expense, and translated Latin texts into Spanish, thus prophetically anticipating the reforms of Vatican II.
