    Biography

Youth and thwarted vocation of Sebastiana Lladó Sala in Mallorca.

Sebastiana Lladó Sala was born on January 2, 1814, in Campos, on the island of Mallorca in Spain, into a wealthy and deeply religious family. Orphaned of her father at fourteen and then her mother in 1836, she aspired early on to the contemplative life with the Carmelites of Palma. However, the Spanish anticlerical laws of disamortization (1833-1852) prohibited the admission of new vocations into monasteries. On the advice of her confessor, she turned toward a life of prayer and service in the world. In 1844, she became a public school teacher in Campos after training at the College of the Purity in Palma. Affectionately nicknamed "Sa Mestra Cases Noves," she resigned from her position in 1853 to devote herself fully to apostolic works.

In 1878, she initiated an association of sisters of the Third Order of Carmel, pronouncing her vows in 1886. In 1891, under the impetus of Bishop Mgr Cervera, the community of Campos was erected as the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Sebastiana took the name Sister Mary Raphaela of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She retired from active leadership in 1894 and died in the odor of sanctity on March 8, 1899.
