Biography
Birth in Bergamo, youth in a modest family, studies with the Canossian Sisters, and beginnings in teaching.
Maria Teresa Gabrieli was born on September 13, 1837, in Bergamo, Italy. The sixth of nine children in a modest family of market gardeners, she lost her father, Giuseppe Gabrieli, at the age of fifteen. Thanks to the sacrifice of her family, who sold their only cow, she studied with the Daughters of Charity (Canossian Sisters) of Bergamo and obtained her teaching diploma in 1854. After the death of her mother, Lucia, in 1863, she managed the family business before dedicating herself fully to the education of poor young girls at the parish of Sant'Alessandro in Colonna, responding to the call of Bishop Pierluigi Speranza.
Life and work
Meeting with Father Luigi Maria Palazzolo, foundation of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Poor, and expansion of the institute.
In 1864, Teresa met Father Luigi Maria Palazzolo and became involved in the Pious Work of Saint Dorothy. In May 1869, she moved to Via della Foppa and, on the night of May 21 to 22, 1869, took her religious vows, thus founding the Congregation of the "Sisters of the Poor" (Suore delle Poverelle). She immediately took in a young disabled orphan. After the founder's death in 1886, Teresa assumed sole leadership of the institute, which, under her governance, experienced remarkable expansion with the opening of more than thirty new communities.

Transfer of her mortal remains and opening of the beatification process in the diocese of Bergamo.

Spirituality and legacy
Spirituality of abandonment to the divine will, global development of the institute, and public tributes.

Her legacy is perpetuated through the Palazzolo Institute, present in Italy and throughout the world (Brazil, DRC, Ivory Coast, etc.).
