    Biography

Youth, priestly vocation, and trials of the First World War of Gaetano Francesco Mauro.

Gaetano Francesco Mauro was born on April 13, 1888, in Rogliano, Calabria (Italy), into a deeply Christian family of seven children. The son of Raffaele Mauro, a craftsman, and Virginia, a seamstress, he felt the call to the priesthood very early and entered the seminary of Cosenza. He was ordained a priest on July 14, 1912, by Bishop Salvatore Scanu. The very next day, he celebrated his first Mass at the shrine of Pompeii, where he met Blessed Bartolo Longo, before being received in an audience by Pope Saint Pius X. After brief ministries, he became a parish priest in Montalto Uffugo in 1914 and received the title of dean of the collegiate church of Santa Maria della Serra. His ministry was interrupted by the First World War: mobilized in 1915 as a soldier and military chaplain, he was captured and interned in the Austrian concentration camp of Katzenau, where he contracted tuberculosis.

    Life and Work

Foundation of the Rural Catechists (Ardorini Missionaries) and merger with the Pious Workers.

Returning to Calabria in 1919, Father Gaetano Mauro was deeply moved by the poverty and religious ignorance of the peasants. Inspired by Saint John Bosco, he founded the "Ricreatorio Don Bosco" in 1921 in the ruins of the former convent of San Francesco di Paola in Montalto Uffugo. In August 1925, he created the Associazione Religiosa degli Oratori Rurali (A.R.D.O.R.) to teach Christian doctrine in the countryside. On December 8, 1928, the Congregation of Rural Catechists (Ardorini Missionaries) was officially born, approved by Bishop Tommaso Trussoni in 1930. Father Mauro was also the confessor and spiritual director of the future Blessed Elena Aiello. On June 28, 1943, the Holy See merged his congregation with that of the Pious Workers (Pii Operai), founded in 1602 by the Venerable Carlo Carafa, giving birth to the Congregation of the Pious Workers Rural Catechists, of which he became the Vicar General.
