    Biography

Childhood and youth of Teresa Candamo Álvarez-Calderon, daughter of a Peruvian president, marked by war and a spiritual revelation in Italy.

María Teresa Luisa Julia Candamo Álvarez-Calderón, known by her religious name Teresa de la Cruz (Teresa of the Cross), was born in Lima, Peru, on August 19, 1875. She was the daughter of Manuel Candamo Iriarte, twice President of the Republic of Peru, and Teresa Álvarez-Calderón. She grew up in an aristocratic and deeply Christian family of seven children. During her childhood, due to the War of the Pacific (1879-1884), her family moved temporarily to Piura. Her father was deported by Chilean troops for refusing to pay war contributions. Teresa received a refined education in Piura and later in Lima, notably at the Sacred Heart College, developing talents for painting, poetry, music, and the French language. The sudden death of her father in May 1904 made her sensitive to suffering and the mystery of the Cross. During a trip to Europe in 1905, while praying before a crucifix in Alassio (Italy), she experienced a decisive mystical encounter where she inwardly perceived the words of Christ inviting her to dedicate her life to God.

    Life and Work

Foundation of the Congregation of the Canonesses of the Cross and development of its evangelization and social action works.

Upon returning to Peru, Teresa de la Cruz Candamo began teaching catechism and organizing charitable works. She gathered a group of companions, nicknamed "the little sisters" (las hermanitas). Despite the prejudices of the aristocracy and initial reluctance, she persevered with the spiritual support of Father Luigi Tezza. On February 24, 1919, she received official authorization to found the Congregation of the Canonesses of the Cross (Canonesas de la Cruz), which was canonically erected on September 14, 1931. The work is centered around the liturgy and catechesis: religious education, social action for vulnerable people, leading spiritual retreats, and providing support in hospitals and prisons. Under her leadership as Superior General, the congregation expanded into Peru, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Albania, and Italy.
