Biography

Janez Frančišek Gnidovec was born on September 29, 1873, in Veliki Lipovec, Slovenia. Coming from a family of modest farmers, he lost his mother at the age of seven. Despite poverty, he pursued brilliant studies with the Franciscans in Novo mesto. After the death of his father in 1892, he entered the seminary in Ljubljana and was ordained a priest on July 23, 1896.
Life and work
His ministry as a priest, rector, his entry into the Lazarists, and his episcopate in Skopje.
After his ordination, he exercised his ministry in Idrija and Vipava, then studied classical philology in Vienna. In 1905, he became the first rector of the Saint Stanislaus Institute in Šentvid. In 1919, he joined the Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists). Appointed Bishop of Skopje in 1924 by Pope Pius XI, he dedicated himself with zeal to this vast and poor diocese, fostering ecumenism and charity towards all.

Bishop Gnidovec led a life of rigorous asceticism and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. His boundless charity earned him the admiration of Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims alike. He exerted a decisive spiritual influence on the young Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (the future Saint Mother Teresa), who received Communion and his blessing from him before her departure on mission.

His death in 1939, the transfer of his remains, and the progress of his cause for beatification.
Stricken by a serious illness, he died on February 3, 1939, in Ljubljana. His remains were transferred in 2010 to the Church of the Sacred Heart in Ljubljana. His cause for beatification opened in 1977. On March 27, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI declared him venerable, recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues. In May 2023, the diocesan inquiry into an alleged miracle was concluded in Skopje.
