Biography

Josep Torras i Bages was born on September 12, 1846, at Mas Gomà, in Les Cabanyes (Catalonia, Spain). After secondary studies in Barcelona, he studied philosophy, literature, and law, obtaining a doctorate in civil and canon law in 1865. Answering the call to the priesthood, he studied theology and was ordained a priest on December 23, 1871, in Girona. After a short exile in France, he exercised various ministries in Barcelona. On June 19, 1899, he was appointed Bishop of Vic by Pope Leo XIII. Consecrated at the monastery of Montserrat, he devoted himself entirely to his diocese, even refusing a promotion to Burgos. He died holily in Vic on February 7, 1916.
