    Biography

The life of Władysław Korniłowicz, from his birth in Warsaw in 1884 to his death in the odor of sanctity at Laski in 1946.

Władysław Emil Korniłowicz was born on August 5, 1884, in Warsaw, Poland, into a family of patriotic intellectuals. His father, Edward Korniłowicz, was an eminent psychiatrist and neurologist, and his mother was named Wiktoria Poll. After completing his secondary education in Warsaw, he turned in 1903, according to his father's wishes, toward studies in natural sciences and philosophy in Zurich, Switzerland. However, feeling a deep call to the priesthood, he abandoned this course in 1905 to enter the diocesan seminary of Warsaw. In 1906, he was sent to continue his philosophical and theological training at the University of Fribourg, in Switzerland, where he obtained his licentiate in theology.

He was ordained a priest on April 6, 1912 (Holy Saturday) in Krakow by Bishop Adam Stefan Sapieha. He then returned to Fribourg to undertake doctoral work while exercising his ministry among the local Polish community.

During the First World War (1914-1916), blocked far from his home diocese, he became chaplain of the women's domestic science school of Countess Jadwiga Zamoyska in Kuźnice, near Zakopane, and became actively involved in the nascent Polish scouting movement. Returning to Warsaw in 1916, he held various diocesan functions (vicar, archivist, censor, and catechist). During the Polish-Soviet War (1919-1920), he served as a military chaplain on the front alongside students of the Academic Legion, reaching the rank of major.

After the conflict, he was appointed chaplain of the Warsaw cadet school, then of the Włocławek garrison, where he taught liturgy at the diocesan seminary. It was there that he met the young seminarian Stefan Wyszyński (future cardinal and Primate of Poland), of whom he became the mentor. From 1922 to 1930, he directed the theological boarding school (Konwikt Teologiczny) for student priests at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), while teaching liturgy and ethics there.

In 1930, he settled permanently in Laski, near Warsaw, at the institution for the blind founded by Mother Elżbieta Róża Czacka. In May 1935, it was he who administered the last sacraments to Marshal Józef Piłsudski on his deathbed.

During the Second World War, sought by the Gestapo because of a radio appeal he had made to German Catholics to condemn Nazi violence, he was forced to hide under the pseudonym of "Father Bies." He found refuge in the Laski branch in Żułów, as well as on the Zamoyski family estate in Kozłówka, where he continued to clandestinely teach Thomistic theology to the sisters and refugees.

Returning to Laski in February 1945, he resumed his ministry despite declining health. Diagnosed with a brain tumor, he underwent two surgical procedures. He passed away in the odor of sanctity at Laski on September 26, 1946, at the age of 62.

    Life and Work

The central role of Father Korniłowicz in the development of the Laski Work and the creation of the Verbum journal.

The major work of Władysław Korniłowicz's life is intimately linked to the development and spiritual structuring of the Laski Work (Dzieło Lasek), which he co-founded and guided alongside Blessed Elżbieta Róża Czacka.

Having become the spiritual director of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters Servants of the Cross (Siostry Franciszkanki Służebnice Krzyża) and the lay collaborators in 1920, he instilled in this work an innovative theological and pastoral vision. In 1924, he formalized the concept of "Triuno" (Three-One). This name, which refers directly to the Holy Trinity, designates the organic unity and close collaboration between three groups of people within the Laski community: the visually impaired (the pupils), the nuns of the congregation, and the lay collaborators and intellectuals.

This synergy aims for a triple objective: educational, apostolic, and charitable. Under his leadership, Laski became a major intellectual and spiritual hub in Poland, combining Franciscan simplicity, Dominican intellectual rigor (Thomism), and Benedictine liturgical depth.

In order to disseminate this spirituality and reach the Polish intelligentsia, often distant from the Church, Father Korniłowicz founded the Verbum publishing house and bookstore in Laski in 1931. In 1934, he launched the cultural and religious quarterly of the same name, Verbum, which he directed until the outbreak of the war in 1939. This high-level intellectual journal actively promoted Christian personalism and Neo-Thomism, publishing in particular translations of the works of the French philosopher Jacques Maritain, as well as writings by leading theologians and writers.

    Path to Holiness

The stages of the diocesan process and the transfer of Father Korniłowicz's relics to Warsaw.

The reputation for holiness of Father Korniłowicz, already firmly established during his lifetime, prompted the Polish Church to quickly initiate the steps toward his glorification.

On April 13, 1978, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints granted the Nihil obstat for the opening of the cause. On November 15, 1978, the diocesan informative process was officially opened in Warsaw by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, Primate of Poland, who wished to honor the memory of the man he considered his spiritual father.

On November 11, 1981, his mortal remains were exhumed from the Laski cemetery and solemnly transferred to St. Martin's Church in Warsaw, managed by the Franciscan Sisters Servants of the Cross, where they now rest.

June 26, 1995, marked the official closure of the diocesan inquiry in Warsaw. On January 16, 1998, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints promulgated the decree of validity for the diocesan inquiry. Finally, in 2008, the Positio super vita, virtutibus et fama sanctitatis was published and submitted in Rome.

    Beatification and canonization

The recognition of the heroic nature of his virtues by Pope Francis in 2019.

The Roman process reached a decisive stage under the pontificate of Pope Francis.

On July 5, 2019, during an audience granted to Cardinal Angelo Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of the virtues of Władysław Korniłowicz. By this act, the Polish priest was declared Venerable.

The cause is currently awaiting the official recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession, an essential step to pave the way for his beatification.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

The synthesis between faith, social commitment and liturgical renewal, and his influence on Cardinal Wyszyński.

The spirituality of the Venerable Władysław Korniłowicz rests on a harmonious synthesis between lived faith, social commitment, and intellectual rigor.

A pioneer of liturgical renewal in Poland long before the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, he insisted on the active, conscious, and communal participation of the faithful in the Mass. For him, the liturgy was not a set of formal rubrics, but the beating heart of Christian life and a powerful tool for cultural education.

He was also distinguished by his extraordinary pastoral openness. He possessed a unique charisma for engaging in dialogue with non-believers, skeptics, Jews, and intellectuals in search of truth, never showing aggressive proselytism, but guiding them through friendship, respect for truth, and love.

His most striking legacy remains the profound influence he exerted on Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. The "Primate of the Millennium" wrote about him: "Among the priests to whom I attribute the greatest influence on my life, in the first place is Father Władysław Korniłowicz [...] I owe an enormous amount to this priest..."

The Work of Laski continues today to live according to the principles of the "Triuno" and the spirituality of Father Korniłowicz, combining concrete service to the most destitute (the blind) with a life of prayer anchored in the liturgy and openness to the world.
