    Biography

Birth, formation, and priestly ordination of Marco Morelli in Lugo and Faenza.

Marco Morelli was born on March 3, 1834, in Lugo, in the province of Ravenna, Italy (within the diocese of Imola), into a family of peasant origin. He was baptized on the very day of his birth in the parish church of Saints Petronio and Prospero (today the church of San Giacomo Maggiore - Brozzi) in Lugo. On June 24, 1841, he received the sacrament of confirmation from the hands of the Bishop of Imola, Msgr. Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, the future Pope Pius IX. Between 1843 and 1846, his family moved to Fusignano. Feeling a deep priestly vocation, he studied at the high school in Lugo, then continued his theological and ecclesiastical formation at the episcopal seminary of Faenza. He was ordained a priest on Easter Day, April 3, 1858, in Faenza. Appointed to the parish of Lugo, he spent his entire life there in the service of the local Church and the most destitute of his community. Despite fragile health and frequent physical problems that worsened starting in 1910, he tirelessly continued his ministry. He passed away holily on June 27, 1912, in Lugo, after having received the last sacraments and a special blessing from Pope Pius X. Initially buried in the tomb of the Capuchin Fathers in the city cemetery, his remains were transferred on September 16, 1939, alongside those of the co-foundress Mother Margherita Ricci Curbastro, to the church of the Institute of the Handmaids in Lugo.

    Life and Work

The pastoral ministry of Father Marco Morelli and the foundation of the Institute of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of the Agonizing Jesus.

The ministry of Father Marco Morelli was marked by intense pastoral, intellectual, and social activity. Deeply attached to the Holy See and attentive to the ecclesial events of his time, he promoted an association for the success of the First Vatican Council and, on that occasion, wrote a popular catechism to popularize the conciliar teachings. He also taught theology for many years at the 'Amaldiana' school in Lugo. A lecturer and publicist, he wrote several sacred dramas (including Santa Dorotea) intended for the Christian and moral education of youth.

He served as spiritual director of the Perpetual Adorers of the Sacred Heart of Lugo and as confessor to various religious communities. In 1903, he was appointed vicar forane of the city of Lugo and a domestic prelate by Pope Pius X.

The heart of Marco Morelli's work lies in the foundation, on October 17, 1888, in Lugo, of the congregation of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of the Agonizing Jesus (Ancelle del Sacro Cuore di Gesù Agonizzante), in collaboration with the Venerable Mother Margherita Ricci Curbastro (born Costanza Ricci Curbastro).

The institute was born from the contemplation of the Heart of Christ and the desire to make reparation for the offenses committed against Him, dedicating itself particularly to the education, basic instruction, and vocational training of poor and marginalized young girls, in order to promote their dignity through work. In 1903, he also founded the 'Little Work of the Daughters of Providence' (Piccola Opera delle Figlie della Provvidenza) to respond to the new forms of poverty of his time.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

The reparatory spirituality of Marco Morelli and the expansion of his congregation.

The spirituality of Marco Morelli is deeply Christocentric and reparatory, centered on the contemplation of the agonizing Heart of Jesus. He conceives the mission of his religious sisters as a consolation offered to Christ: "The Handmaids must console Jesus like the angel in the Garden of Olives" ("Le Ancelle debbono consolare Gesù come l'angelo nell'Orto degli Olivi"). This spirituality of reparation is expressed through a total abandonment to the divine will in the midst of trials and illness, combined with an active charity towards the weakest and most destitute, considered as the suffering members of Christ.

The legacy of Father Marco Morelli continues today through the congregation of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of the Agonizing Jesus. Present in Italy, the work has also expanded into several mission countries, notably in Brazil, the Philippines, Togo, and Colombia, where the sisters continue their mission of education, parish pastoral care, and social assistance to the poorest.
