    Biography

Youth, poverty, and early vocation of José Estanislao Zavala López in Mexico.

José Estanislao Serapión Francisco de la Trinidad Zavala López, known in religion by the name Miguel Francisco (or simply Miguel) and affectionately nicknamed "Padre Zavalita," was born on November 12, 1867, in Rancho Nuevo de Santa Clara, near Puruándiro in the State of Michoacán, Mexico. Coming from a very modest peasant family, he was the son of José Rafael Zavala and María Micaela López. Baptized on November 14, 1867, he lost his father at the age of four. His mother then had to work as a washerwoman to provide for the family's needs, alongside his younger sister Pilar. Despite the poverty, he attended a private school run by Rosa and Antonia Paniagua. Encouraged by his mother and his confessor, the Augustinian father Martín Delgado, he left for Morelia on December 26, 1878, to enter the seminary, staying temporarily with the Capuchin sisters while awaiting his admission.

He exercised his ministry in El Sabino, Querétaro, and then in Morelia as provincial definitor, provincial secretary, and novice master. From 1908, he dedicated himself to the parishes of Moroleón, Yuriria (supporting the population during the Cristero War), Mexico City, and Salvatierra.
