    Biography

    Birth of Teresa Borgarino in Boves, her modest youth, her entry into the Daughters of Charity, and her first vows under the name Sister Gabriella.

    Teresa Borgarino was born on September 2, 1880, in Boves, in the Piedmont region of Italy, into a very modest and deeply devout peasant family. Nicknamed "Ginota," she began working at the age of ten in a silk mill to help her parents, Lorenzo Borgarino and Maria Cerato, and later became a governess. Feeling a religious calling, she entered the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in Fossano on February 2, 1899. After recovering her health, she took the habit in 1902 and joined the Casa della Misericordia in Angera. In 1906, she was sent to Lugano in Switzerland, where she pronounced her first vows on July 2, 1906, under the name Sister Gabriella.

    Sister Gabriella's religious life unfolded in the fulfillment of humble domestic tasks: cooking, managing the pantry, the vegetable garden, and caring for sick sisters. She considered herself a "hidden root" of her congregation. During the Spanish flu pandemic (1918-1920) in Lugano, she gave of herself without counting the cost as a nurse. In November 1919, she was transferred to Grugliasco to serve in the kitchen for the elderly sisters. In 1931, the community moved to the House of the Immaculate in Luserna San Giovanni, where she spent the rest of her life in joy and daily service.

    Sister Gabriella's life was marked by mystical experiences lived in discretion. On June 25, 1919, in Lugano, she was graced with a first apparition of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, inviting her to pray for the Pope and the unity of the Church. In Grugliasco, Christ taught her the "little way" of charity. In September 1936, in Luserna San Giovanni, Jesus appeared to her showing her His Divine Heart and entrusted her with the ejaculatory prayer: "Divine Providence of the Heart of Jesus, provide for it!". He asked her to spread this prayer of absolute trust, which received the approval of Bishop Angelo Jelmini and Cardinal Maurilio Fossati.

    Sister Gabriella passed away on January 1, 1949, in Luserna San Giovanni due to severe arthritis. Her cause for beatification opened on February 3, 2002, in the Diocese of Pinerolo under the impetus of Bishop Pier Giorgio Debernardi. On January 20, 2022, Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, proclaiming her venerable. A diocesan inquiry into an alleged miracle (the unexplained healing of a young seminarian suffering from a serious tumor in 2003) was conducted between 2009 and 2011, and the file was accepted by the Vatican in 2014 for study.
