Biography
Birth and youth of Francisca Ana María Alcover Morell in Sóller.
Francisca Ana María Alcover Morell was born on October 19, 1912, in Sóller, on the island of Mallorca in Spain. She was baptized on October 26, 1912, in the parish church of Sant Bartomeu. Her parents, Pere Antoni Alcover Pons and Maria Morell Castanyer, were emigrants who had returned from Carcassonne after making their fortune. As the only surviving child after the premature loss of her two older siblings, she was raised in humility and service. From 1915, she studied with the Daughters of Mary of the Pious Schools (Escolapias) of Sóller, where she received a solid education imbued with the spirituality of Saint Joseph of Calasanz. She made her first communion there in 1919 and her confirmation in 1921.

Francisca chose to live her faith as a committed laywoman. She worked as an office clerk for the Sóller Railway company. At the same time, she was actively involved in the local Women's Catholic Action, becoming its secretary in 1933 and then president from 1939 to 1942. She volunteered to teach literacy to women and collaborated actively with the local and Catholic press, publishing nearly 500 articles and poems between 1930 and 1953. An honorary member of the Nocturnal Adoration, she faced her family's financial ruin from 1946 onwards with submission, working hard to provide for the needs of her sick parents.

In 1951, Francisca was afflicted with a brain tumor that gradually deprived her of her sight and the use of her limbs. She welcomed this trial with heroic patience, offering her sufferings for the Church and the youth. She passed away holily on March 10, 1954, in Sóller at the age of 41. Her funeral gathered a huge crowd. Her remains, initially buried in the municipal cemetery, were solemnly transferred on March 10, 1999, to the Chapel of the Name of Jesus in the parish church of Sant Bartomeu in Sóller.

The cause for the beatification and canonization of Francisca Ana María Alcover Morell was opened at the diocesan level on October 3, 1997, by the Bishop of Mallorca, Msgr. Teodoro Úbeda. On February 23, 2023, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, officially declaring her Venerable. A recognized miracle is now required for her beatification.
