    Biography

Born in Spain, orphaned early, she entered the Daughters of Jesus under the guidance of Saint Candida Maria of Jesus.

The Venerable Vicenta Guilarte Alonso (in religion Sister Vicenta Ildefonsa) was born on January 21, 1879, in Rojas de Bureba, in the province of Burgos, Spain. She was the daughter of Esteban Guilarte Pérez and Francisca Alonso Munguía. At her baptism, celebrated on January 23, 1879, in the parish of Santo André Apóstolo, the priest added to her first name that of the saint of the day, Saint Ildefonsus, hence her full name of Vicenta Ildefonsa. Orphaned of both father and mother in her adolescence, she went to live at the age of 17 in Burgos with her uncle, who was a priest. It was in this deeply Christian home that her religious vocation matured. On October 25, 1901, she was welcomed by the foundress of the Congregation of the Daughters of Jesus (Hijas de Jesús), Saint Candida Maria of Jesus, at the novitiate of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Salamanca. She officially began her novitiate in December 1901. She pronounced her first vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity on December 8, 1903, and then made her perpetual profession on December 8, 1909, into the hands of the foundress.

    Mission 02 / 05

    Life and Work

Mission in Brazil starting in 1911, teaching in Pirenópolis, then humble service as a doorkeeper and sacristan in Leopoldina for 33 years.

In 1911, the foundress, Saint Candida Maria de Jesus, responded favorably to the request of the Bishop of Goiás in Brazil to found a college there. Sister Vicenta was chosen to be part of the congregation's first missionary expedition outside of Spain, composed of six nuns. The group left the port of Cádiz on October 3, 1911, and arrived at the port of Santos in Brazil on October 18, 1911. After an arduous journey by train, then on horseback through the forest under the guidance of Father Bruno Alberdi, they reached their destination, Pirenópolis, on November 7, 1911. They immediately opened the "Colégio Imaculada" (College of the Immaculate) there. Sister Vicenta devoted herself with dedication to the education of poor children and also taught in the local public school. She also served as second councilor and bursar of the community from 1911 to 1927. In 1927, she was transferred to Leopoldina, in the state of Minas Gerais. Although she had held responsibilities as vice-superior, she was entrusted with the humble task of doorkeeper and sacristan of the "Colégio Imaculada Conceição." She accepted this situation with profound humility and serene joy, without ever complaining, which greatly edified her fellow sisters. She held this position in an exemplary manner for thirty-three years, until her death. Sister Vicenta passed away on July 6, 1960, in Leopoldina, at the age of 81, following a fall that had caused a fracture of the femur.
