Biography
Birth, childhood marked by poverty, and beginnings in the teaching profession of María Laura de Jesús Montoya y Upegui.
María Laura de Jesús Montoya y Upegui was born on May 26, 1874, in Jericó, Colombia. The daughter of Juan de la Cruz Montoya and Dolores Upegui, she was baptized four hours after her birth. At the age of two, her father was assassinated during a civil war, plunging the family into poverty. Her mother taught her forgiveness and prayer for the assassin. Sent to live with her maternal grandmother at the 'La Vívora' property, she suffered from loneliness but found refuge in faith. At 16, she decided to become a schoolteacher to support her family. Graduating from the Medellín Normal School in 1893, she led a brilliant teaching career.
Life and Work
The missionary call to the indigenous people and the foundation of her congregation.
Feeling a missionary call, Laura decided to evangelize the indigenous populations of Colombia. In May 1914, supported by Bishop Maximiliano Crespo Rivera, she settled in Dabeiba among the Embera-Chamí indigenous people. There, she founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Immaculate and Saint Catherine of Siena (the "Laurites"), established in 1916. She made her perpetual vows in 1924 under the name Sister Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena. Her innovative approach, respectful of indigenous culture, drew criticism. Despite the illness that paralyzed her for the last nine years of her life, she led her congregation until her death on October 21, 1949, in Belencito.

Her canonization followed the healing of Dr. Carlos Eduardo Restrepo from an esophageal perforation and severe mediastinitis. Pope Benedict XVI approved this miracle in 2012.
