Biography
Youth, early vocation, and initial religious experiences of María Amparo Delgado García.
María Amparo Delgado García, in religion Mother María Amparo of the Sacred Heart, was born on October 30, 1889, in Cantalapiedra, Spain. Coming from a deeply Christian family, she was the youngest of eight children. After the death of her father at the age of five, she manifested an early piety. At ten years old, she received a mystical vision of a monastery established on a river of graces springing from the Heart of Jesus. On May 12, 1909, she entered the Cistercian monastery of Arévalo, which she had to leave due to tuberculosis. On August 15, 1912, she experienced the mystical event of the spiritual marriage with the Holy Trinity. Having recovered, she entered the Poor Clares of Corpus Christi in Salamanca on May 19, 1913.
Life and Work
The foundation of the Monastery of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Cantalapiedra.
Mother María Amparo founded the Monastery of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Cantalapiedra, realizing her childhood vision. Supported by her spiritual director, the Dominican Juan González Arintero, and by Abbot Ambrosio Morales Manzano, she left Salamanca on May 31, 1920, with two companions. The first Mass was celebrated there on June 1, 1920. This monastery of the Order of Poor Clares has as its charism to love, make reparation to, and console the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and to pray for the sanctification of priests. Appointed as the first abbess, she led the nascent community with absolute trust in Providence.
Journey toward holiness
Mystical life, stigmata, and self-offering as a victim soul.
Her life was marked by an intimate union with the Passion of Christ. Offering herself as a 'victim soul' for the salvation of souls and the sanctification of the clergy, she received the stigmata in the form of hardened nails, felt as a burning fire. She guided her community through the Spanish Civil War and died in the odor of sanctity on July 6, 1941, in Cantalapiedra. Her final words expressed the sweetness of dying after having loved the Heart of Jesus and suffered for Him. She rests in the monastery chapel.
Beatification and canonization
The process of recognition of her holiness by the Catholic Church.
The cause for beatification was introduced in the Diocese of Salamanca. The Nihil obstat decree was granted by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints on April 5, 1975. The diocesan inquiry opened on February 20, 1977, and its validity was decreed on March 14, 1986. On July 2, 1994, Pope John Paul II signed the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, conferring upon her the title of Venerable. The cause is awaiting the recognition of a miracle for her beatification.
Spirituality and legacy
The Franciscan spiritual legacy and the vitality of her foundation.
The spirituality of the Venerable María Amparo is rooted in the Franciscan tradition of poverty, simplicity, and charity, combined with a devotion to the Sacred Heart and the Eucharist. Her legacy rests on trust in Providence and prayer for the Church. Today, the Monastery of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Cantalapiedra remains a very active spiritual center and one of the most flourishing Poor Clare communities in Spain.
