    Biography

Birth, youth, and life choices of Sílvia Cardoso following a significant bereavement.

Sílvia Cardoso Ferreira da Silva was born on July 26, 1882, at the Casa da Torre, in Paços de Ferreira, in the district of Porto, Portugal. She was the eldest of four children of Manuel Umbelino Ferreira da Silva and Joaquina Emília da Conceição Cardoso, a particularly wealthy Catholic family. Baptized on August 4, 1882, in the parish church of Santa Eulália de Paços de Ferreira, she left with her parents for Brazil the following year, before returning to settle permanently in Portugal in 1889, at the age of seven. She continued her studies at the Colégio Inglês do Coração de Maria in Porto, then joined the Colégio das Doroteias in Sardão (Vila Nova de Gaia) in 1896. In 1912, she became engaged to her cousin, Dr. Acácio Umbelino Pereira da Silva. However, he died suddenly in Brazil on November 24, 1913, shortly before their wedding was to be celebrated. This profound grief marked a decisive turning point in her life: she chose to renounce marriage permanently to dedicate herself entirely to God and to the service of the most destitute. In 1917, she made a vow of perpetual chastity. In 1918, she survived the Spanish flu pandemic (which took her father), which strengthened her determination to devote herself to the sick.

    Life and Work

The numerous foundations and charitable works of the Apostle of Charity in Portugal.

Nicknamed the "Apostle of Charity" (Apóstola da Caridade), Sílvia Cardoso dedicated her life and personal fortune to multiple social and evangelization works. In 1918, she made a major contribution to the establishment and opening of the hospital in Paços de Ferreira. In 1921, she founded at her own expense the Asilo-Creche de S. António (Saint Anthony Asylum-Crèche), a boarding school for poor young girls that also served meals to the needy, to which she annexed the Colégio de S. José. The same year, she created the Obra Social e Cultural Sílvia Cardoso to structure aid for the disadvantaged populations of her region. Her charitable action extended well beyond her hometown. She energized and financially supported numerous institutions throughout Portugal, notably: the Patronato de Sopa dos Pobres and the Internato Margarida Alves de Magalhães in Penafiel; the Patronato da Divina Providência in Espinho; the Lar das Raparigas and the Lar de Santa Rita in Porto; the Casa dos Rapazes in Barcelos; the Casa de Retiros de Sequeira in Lousada; the Casa da Granja in Paredes; the Casa da Quinta do Bosque in Amadora; and the Instituto Sant'Ana, which she affectionately nicknamed her "Caixote do Lixo" (the trash bin) because it welcomed the unemployed, the disabled, and abandoned young girls without distinction. She also financed the studies of many poor children, particularly those who felt a priestly vocation.
