    Biography

The life of Francesca Lancellotti, from her birth in Basilicata to her move to Rome following a mystical revelation.

The Venerable Francesca Lancellotti was born on July 7, 1917, in Oppido Lucano, a village in the province of Potenza, in the Basilicata region of Italy. She was baptized on August 15 of the same year, on the feast of the Assumption. Coming from a family of modest farmers, she was quickly introduced to the hard labor of the fields and was only able to attend elementary school until the second grade. From a very young age, she manifested a precocious piety and a deep attachment to heavenly realities, frequently going to pray at the Belvedere sanctuary to venerate the Madonna della Purità (Our Lady of Purity).

Although she ardently desired to embrace religious life, she submitted out of obedience to her father's will, who directed her toward marriage. After a three-year engagement, she married Faustino Zotta, a saddler and farmer, on October 10, 1938. Two children were born of this union: Maria Luigia (nicknamed Gina) and Domenico. In 1939, the couple opened a small tobacco, liquor, and grocery shop in Oppido Lucano.

On July 7, 1956, the day of her 39th birthday, Francesca experienced a significant mystical event: a private revelation from the Archangel Saint Michael, who asked her to leave her native land to settle in Rome with her family in order to fulfill a spiritual mission there. Obeying this call, the couple sold their property and business and moved to Rome in 1960. They settled first in the Primavalle district, then near the Pantheon, and finally on Via del Seminario. Francesca then assiduously frequented the church of Sant'Agostino. She passed away on September 4, 2008, at the San Giovanni Addolorata hospital in Rome, at the age of 91.

    Life and Work

Francesca Lancellotti's activity of hospitality and spiritual support for the poor and the sick in Rome.

The life of Francesca Lancellotti is that of a laywoman and mother who, while fully assuming her duties of state, deployed an intense activity of hospitality and spiritual support. Although she did not found a religious institute in the canonical sense, her work lies in the foundation of a spiritual home open to all. In Rome, her house quickly became a haven of peace and a point of reference for the poor, the sick, and people in search of advice or spiritual comfort.

Endowed with particular charisms and mystical gifts that she strove to live in discretion and humility, she received dozens of visitors of all social conditions daily. Destitute people, but also doctors, ministers, priests, and cardinals came to solicit the advice and prayers of this simple and uneducated woman. She exercised an informal ministry of counsel and intercession, categorically refusing any financial compensation for her prayers, faithful to an ideal of absolute evangelical poverty.

The reputation of holiness (fama di santità) and of signs (fama di segni) of Francesca Lancellotti, already very vivid during her lifetime, spread rapidly after her death. The cause for beatification and canonization was officially opened at the Vicariate of Rome on June 16, 2016. The diocesan inquiry into her life, heroic virtues, and reputation of holiness was conducted with rigor and concluded solemnly on January 17, 2020, during a session presided over by Cardinal Vicar Angelo De Donatis in the Conciliation Hall of the Apostolic Palace of the Lateran. On October 23, 2020, the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints issued the decree of legal validity for this diocesan inquiry. The Positio, a summary document on her virtues, was subsequently examined by theological consultants who rendered a favorable opinion on March 16, 2023.
