    Biography

    Youth and trials of Casimiro Barello Morello in Italy.

    Casimiro Barello Morello was born on January 31, 1857 (or January 23 according to some sources) in Cavagnolo, Italy. Coming from a family of poor peasants, he lost his mother at the age of 12. At 15, struck by a severe gastroenteritis, he benefited from two apparitions of the Virgin Mary who healed him and invited him to dedicate his life to prayer and pilgrimage. In the autumn of 1875, he left his home to begin his life as a pilgrim.

    Inspired by Saint Benedict Joseph Labre, Casimiro chose to live in total destitution. Dressed in a simple habit and sandals, he traveled approximately 20,000 kilometers on foot through Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. Nicknamed the "pilgrim of the Eucharist," he spent long hours in adoration before the tabernacle. In February 1884, he arrived in Alcoy, Spain, where he successfully exhorted the inhabitants to respect the Sunday rest.

    After his death on March 9, 1884, in Alcoy, the local population showed him great devotion. Numerous graces and healings are attributed to his intercession. His relics were transferred in 1894 to the church of San Jorge in Alcoy. The cause for beatification, opened by the Archdiocese of Valencia, suffered delays due to the Spanish Civil War, which destroyed part of the archives.

    The cause of Casimiro Barello Morello is followed by the General Postulation of the Salesians. On July 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II promulgated the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, granting him the title of "Venerable." The cause remains pending the official recognition of a miracle for his beatification.
