Biography
Enrico Medi was born in 1911 in Italy. A brilliant physicist trained by Enrico Fermi, he married Enrica Zanini, with whom he had six daughters.
Enrico Medi was born on April 26, 1911, in Porto Recanati, in the province of Macerata, Italy. He was the son of Arturo Medi, a physician, and Maria Luisa Mei. In 1914, his family moved to Belvedere Ostrense, then relocated to Rome in 1920. Enrico studied at the Santa Maria College and then at the Istituto Massimo, where he founded the Student Missionary League. He obtained his degree in pure physics in 1932 at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" under the direction of Enrico Fermi, with a thesis on the neutron. On June 11, 1938, he married Enrica Zanini, with whom he had six daughters (Maria Beatrice, Maria Chiara, Maria Pia, Maria Grazia, Maria Stella, and Maria Emanuela). In 1942, he obtained the chair of experimental physics at the University of Palermo.

After the Second World War, Enrico Medi became involved in politics within the Christian Democracy party. Elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1946, then as a deputy in 1948 and 1972, he advocated for regional autonomy and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Scientifically, he presided over the National Institute of Geophysics starting in 1949 and became vice-president of Euratom in 1958, a position from which he resigned in 1965 for reasons of conscience. A pioneer of scientific popularization on Italian television, he presented the program "Le avventure della scienza" and co-presented the live broadcast of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

Faithful to the Church, Enrico Medi was guided by Don Luigi Orione and became a spiritual son close to Padre Pio. He faced cancer with serenity until his death in 1974.

He benefited from the counsel of Don Luigi Orione, and later became a spiritual son very close to Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio), who consulted him for the construction of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza. Appointed a member of the Consulta of the Laity for the Vatican City State by Paul VI in 1966, he led a humble and charitable life. Afflicted with prostate cancer diagnosed in 1970, he faced the illness with serenity and passed away in Rome on May 26, 1974.
Beatification and canonization
The cause for the beatification of Enrico Medi, introduced in 1995, reached a major milestone in 2024 with the recognition of his heroic virtues by Pope Francis.
In 1985, Pope John Paul II cited Enrico Medi as a model for scientists. His cause for beatification and canonization was officially introduced on May 26, 1995, by the Diocese of Senigallia. The diocesan inquiry was closed on October 26, 2013. On May 23, 2024, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, conferring upon him the title of Venerable.
