Youth, thwarted vocation, and family life of João Luiz Pozzobon.

João Luiz Pozzobon was born on December 12, 1904, in Ribeirão, in the district of Cachoeira (today São João do Polêsine), Brazil. Coming from a family of modest farmers of Italian origin, he grew up in piety and desired to become a priest from the age of ten. He studied briefly at the Pallottine Fathers' seminary in Vale Vêneto, but had to give it up after ten months due to fragile health and serious vision problems. In April 1928, he married Theresa Maria Turcato, with whom he settled in Restinga Sêca to manage a small hotel. After his wife's death from tuberculosis in May 1933, he remarried on August 12 of the same year to Vitória Maria Filippetto. To support his family of seven children, he opened a small grocery store in Santa Maria.
